Damp is a problem in many buildings. Even low levels of penetration can cause discolouration to surface plaster and wall coverings. The high level of rainfall experienced in the UK over the past few years has only heightened the problem. Damp problems when left without treatment can also affect our health, aggravating respiratory problems and encouraging the emergence of mites and mould.
The three main types of damp problem are: rising damp, penetrating damp and condensation damp. All can be treated permanently with the Newton Damp Proofing Membranes. The problems are briefly described below, but for a full explanation, and for some handy tips for dealing with the damp problems, please sign up for The Guide To Diagnosing And Treating Damp Permanently using the signup bar to the right.
- Rising Damp
Rising Damp is caused by water soaking up through porous materials into the floors and walls of the property. The walls often feel damp and cold to the touch and there is usually an unsightly mark on the walls. Any wall in contact with the gound can suffer from rising damp. A permanent rising damp treatment would be required - Penetrating Damp
Penetrating damp is caused by issues with the building or plumbing where a problem has allowed water to enter the property. Properties near the sea or in exposed areas can suffer the effects of penetrating damp from driving rain. In one of our case studies, Newton 503 Mesh damp proof membrane was used to cure aggressive damp pentration in an exposed seaside cottage. For full details of this, follow this link

- Condensation Damp
Condensation damp is cuased by excessive moisture that cannot escape from the property – as opposed to water coming in, in the cases of rising damp and penetrating damp. Poor heating or using radiators to dry clothes may be a cause. Symptoms would likely include mould on the walls, ceilings and fixtures and fittings, and there is often a musty smell
Newton’s Damp Proof Membrane range of products provide a firm key and an effective barrier on any damp or deteriorating surfaces where direct bonding is not possible, including timber frame buildings.

The key advantage of the Newton Damp Proofing Membranes is that they form a physical barrier between the old surface and the new finish. They can also be punctured when wall fittings are needed, providing Newton Mastic is applied before fixing.
