Damp Plaster

Damp Plaster

Damp Plaster is often a problem in old houses

Rising and penetrating dampness in buildings causes damp plaster, salting and general deterioration of internal wall finishes. Plaster walls deteriorate rapidly once they have become saturated with water. The cause of the damp plaster should be pinpointed. Whether this dampness is due to a lack of an affective damp proof course, a building defect, exposure to the elements and a lack of adequate protection or because it is below the ground, often the remedial works necessary will be exhaustive, disruptive and expensive and will usually include the removal of any damp plaster.

Please note, for cased of damp plaster in cellars or basements, a full damp tanking system would be recommended. For our full range of extensive range of basement waterproofing solutions, please visit our sister website www.newton-membranes.co.uk, or call us for advice

What’s The Solution For Treating Damp Plaster?

There is a solution available which is both tried and tested and guaranteed to be a permanent solution to damp walls, damp plaster and water ingress problems either above or below the ground which may not even require the removal of the damp plaster.

The solution is John Newton & Company damp and waterproofing membrane systems. Newton damp proof membrane systems comprise a range of top quality High Density Polypropylene and Polyethylene membranes for walls, floors and vaulted ceilings. Above the ground, Newton damp proofing systems provide a physical and permanent separation barrier against rising and penetrating damp, so that the damp plaster can dry. Provided the existing damp plaster is not friable, the membrane can be applied directly over the top of the damp plaster and the ‘egg box’ stud formation serves to hold areas of the membrane away from the wall creating an air gap in to which moisture and moisture vapour can evaporate. Because the membrane is impermeable, the integrity of the new wall finishes is protected and maintained.

The damp proof membrane has an added feature in that it actually creates damp pressure equalisation which means that as the high air pressure in the gap behind the membrane tries to equalise with the lower external air pressure it effectively squeezes moisture out of the structure. Damp proof membranes can be installed by a diy damp expert, or a damp proof company. We can put you in touch with a recommended company in your area, free of charge, experienced in dealing with damp plaster and its causes – penetrating damp, dpc damp proof course problems, condensation damp and strategies for treating damp permanently.

When installed in a below ground situation the damp proofing membrane system is usually supplemented by a Newton Drainage System. The membrane and drainage conduit, situated at the wall/floor junction depressurises and water enters through the fabric of the building and then collect the water to be managed away from the building by either passive or power methods. Newton Water Management Systems are considered to be one of the most effective and trouble free systems available and when installed by a Newton Recommended Specialist Waterproofing Contractor can command a ten year insured installation guarantee giving the end user peace of mind for the future.

Damp Plaster - Damp Proof Membranes

Newton Damp Proof Membranes can often be applied over the damp plaster without the need to remove it

If damp plaster problems have been dealt with by the installation of a Newton Damp or Waterproofing System then there are a multitude of wall and floor finishes which can be applied over the membranes ranging from direct plasters to independent insulated dry lined walls and timber and tiled floors.

Newton membrane systems have been extensively to treat damp plaster and many other damp problems in new build, refurbishment and historical projects with great effect, and are regularly specified as the product of choice by thousands of architects, engineers and surveyors all around the UK.

Mr George Sampson, who is one of the most technically gifted architects working in partnership with John Newton & Company said “When I come across a damp proofing or waterproofing situation  – damp plaster, damp walls, rising damp, basement waterproofing  and all common damp problems – I just reach for my John Newton Technical Folder where I find the solution I was looking for. I have used various waterproofing and damp proofing solutions over the years but the Newton range of systems have definitely proved most reliable”
