Damp Walls Treatment
A damp walls treatment is necessary in many properties. A damp wall is a huge inconvenience in that it can be detrimental to wall finishes, look unattractive and be time consuming and costly to maintain. It is always important to diagnose the cause of the dampness and if possible remove the cause, and then make good any damage to wall surfaces or plaster.
The main causes of dampness which would require damp walls treatment are:
About Rising Damp
Rising damp describes water that rises from the ground through the capillaries of the wall structure, usually to a height of about one metre above the ground. Most relatively new houses have physical damp proof courses in the walls and this will prevent rising damp. However, in some older properties the damp proof course may have become defective, or not even exist in the first place, so the dampness is not prohibited at all and treating damp would be required. The rising damp can show itself on the internal surfaces as staining, salting, spoiled decorative finishes, blown plaster – or a combination of those things. A permanent damp walls treatment would be required. Read More about Rising Damp Treatment
About Penetrating Damp
Penetrating damp is mostly caused by water being absorbed by the structure laterally, often causing damp walls and damp timber. Where the structure has no protection and is porous, exposure to bad weather often results in driving rain causing penetrating damp and an internal damp wall. Building defects can lead to persistent wetting of walls and therefore penetrating damp and high adjacent external ground levels can act as a route for ground water to come against a building. This results in penetrating damp – or in extreme cases flooding. Read More about Penetrating Damp
Penetrating damp is also common in damp cellars and damp basements. In below ground applications of this sort, a full damp tanking system would be recommended rather than a pure damp walls treatment. Damp Walls Treatment- Recommendations

Newton Newlath Damp Proof Membrane has mesh thermically welded to it, allowing plaster to be applied directly to it
Whether rising or penetrating damp, a damp wall is rarely wanted or going to be tolerated and there are many products and methods which claimto be able to offer damp walls treatment.
Paul McDavies is a qualified waterproofing and damp proofing surveyor with 15 years experience in the damp proofing and waterproofing industry says “The companies I have worked for have at one point or another used most of the products that are available for damp walls treatment including rising damp, penetrating damp and condensation damp. In my opinion you would be hard pushed to beat the quality and performance provided by Newton Damp Proof Membranes”
Why Newton Damp Proof Membranes?
Newton Damp Proof Membranes are manufactured to the highest quality of their type in the European market. As a damp walls treatment, they work by forming an impermeable barrier between the damp wall and the new wall surface, thus allowing the damp wall to dry out behind the wall. Newton Damp Proof Membranes are suitable for almost all damp wall scenarios. They are moulded into a stud formation and come in varying roll sizes to suit most jobs. The damp proof membranes, some with a thermically welded mesh to provide a key for plastering, are offered up to the surface of the damp wall areas and secured using purpose made fixing plugs.
The advantage of using Newton Damp Proof Membranes as a damp walls treatment is that minimal or no surface preparation is required. The membrane is impermeable to damp and the associated salts and contaminants. A diy damp specialist could install the membrane, or we could put you in touch for free with an expert damp company in your area.
Newton Damp Proof Membranes provide a quickly installed, physical and permanent barrier against rising and penetrating damp either for above ground damp walls or below the ground in a damp basement. They are the recommended permanent damp walls treatment and would be the solution for all types of damp – including damp plaster and damp mould.
There are a multitude of finishes which can be applied over the membrane to give the required aesthetic finish either internally or externally depending on the situation and requirement of the project.
John Newton & Company’s technical team are always available to help with an enquiry and if required a guaranteed installation can be achieved through one of our Registered Installers. All Newton Damp Proofing Membranes hold a 30 year manufacturers warranty.
