Penetrating Damp
What Is Penetrating Damp?
Penetrating Damp is usually caused by problems within the building structure or the roof where a leak or crack allows water to penetrate following heavy rain or snow. Problems with the plumbing system can also be a cause with defects causing leaks. Properties near the sea or in exposed areas can suffer from penetrating damp from driving rain. A clear sign of penetrating damp would be a watermark appearing on the interior wall, and this will grow if water continues to enter. Penetrating damp can cause real problems to the finishes in a property, and the levels of moisture within the structure can continue to cause problems for months and sometimes years due to the long drying out time required. The problem is often coupled with a musty smell in the house.
Penetrating damp is often a problem in properties with single leaf brick walls. The bricks take a very long time to dry out, making the house feel much colder, and increasing your heating bills! A permanent damp proofing solution would likely be required.
Newton Damp Proof Membranes have been used effectively in many instances of aggressive penetrating damp. Read about how Newton 503 Mesh was used externally to cure penetrating damp in an exposed seaside cottage here: Penetrating Damp – Talmine Cottage
How Newton Damp Proof Membranes Can Treat Penetrating Damp
Whether the penetrating damp is ongoing or due to residual moisture, Newton Damp Proof Membranes offer a quick, permanent and guarantee-backed solution. Once installed the membranes provide a permanent separation barrier between the damp walls and internal finishes meaning a dry internal surface and protection are maintained at all times.
The ‘Air Gap Technology’ Is The Key Element To The Success of Newton Damp Proof Membranes
Our Newton Newlath 2000, Newton 503, Newton 503 Mesh and Newtonite membranes are moulded into a stud profile. The studs act as stilts

holding areas of the membrane away from the surfaces to which they are applied and this maintains an air gap into which moisture and moisture vapour can evaporate and move unhindered. Read more about our damp proof products here: Newton Damp Proof Products
When dealing with penetrating damp, a damp specialist would on occasion recommend that Newton damp proof membranes are applied to external facades of buildings to provide support for renders and protection from penetrating damp. Once a sound base of render has been applied to our membrane there are a multitude of different aesthetic finishes that can be used to achieve the required look and feel including lime render for historical buildings.
Mrs S Eason from Kent comments: “Our house is located in a very exposed position on the East Coast of Kent. We spent thousands of pounds having the weather facing gable end of our house rendered to try to prevent the penetrating dampness through the gable. Unfortunately it didn’t work. A friend of ours recommended John Newton & Company products to us and we have now had Newton Newlath 2000 installed internally. We are delighted with the results as there is now no sign of dampness on the walls”
