Basement Waterproofing

My Basement is flooding or at risk of flooding, Do I need a sump pump?

Sump Pump Provides A Permanent Solution For A Flooded Basement

Sump Pump Provides A Permanent Solution For A Flooded Basement

All below ground structures especially basements are at risk when the ground is saturated of ground water entering the structure.   Weather conditions are changing dramatically and flooding that may never have existed are now becoming a reality.  This is a real issue with people working or living in basement situations and yet  people are sceptical about putting in a basement sump and pump because:

  • You have never had a water problem in there so a sump pump is overkill not necessary?
  • A sump pump needs maintenance and I don’t think it warrants the costs involved

The fact is water will enter a structure if there is any form of defect and it doesn’t take account of previous history. Water by its very nature will take the least path of resistance and will enter below ground structures if adequate protection is not put in place.   Sump pump protection is common place when dealing with below ground structures – a sewerage pump or well pump may be essential and yet the thought of putting in a submersible pump for dealing with water pumping from a waterproofing system is still perceived as not necessary or overkill.   People’s perceptions soon change when they do have a ground water problem and a flooded basement, then the thought of basement pump and sump pits seems like a really good idea!    It is possible to retrofit a sump pump system but it’s easier and more cost effective to plan to have a separate water sump in your basement at design stage.

Internal Cavity Drain Systems – The Quick And Easy Way To Waterproof Your Basement

Internal cavity drain systems are a quick and easy way to waterproof your basement and the reality is that if you are using this technique and your basement does not have an open elevation to drain to then you will be required to put install a drainage pump to get rid of the water.  Sump pump units can also be tailored to deal with other aspects of the build and the correctly specified pump can accommodate water from light wells, washing machines, sinks and condensation overflows etc.  In many instances the ability to get rid of other sources of water with the sump pump can save clients a lot of money by not having to install new drainage runs.    It is worth keeping in mind pump maintenance when discharging water from other areas into a sump pump.  It may be beneficial to separate out sewerage pump systems from the water from the basement waterproofing system as the professional installer may not wish to take the maintenance responsibility for a combined system.
